From March to April, cherry blossoms brighten up the city – Negawa Ryokudo, a pathway along a stream, is beautifully lined with cherry blossoms; there’s a vibrant contrast between the yellow of rape flowers and the pink of cherry blossoms on the banks of Zanbori River. You can feel the arrival of spring everywhere. To enjoy the spring landscape, a walking event is held in early April, with tours around famous cherry blossoms spots in the cities of Tachikawa and Kunitachi. At the “Flower Festival” in Showa Kinen Park from late March to late May, you can enjoy various flowers blooming one after another all around the park.
Seasonal Scenery of Summer in Tachikawa Tachikawa’s summer is not complete without attending the “Tachikawa Fireworks Festival at Showa Kinen Park”. Approximately 5,000 fireworks, including the rare Isshaku-Gosundama (44.5cm balls) fireworks and original starmine, decorate the sky above Tachikawa. A number of Matsuri(Festival) the fireworks, including the “Tachikawa Yoito Festival” where illuminated portable shrines are paraded along Sun Sun Road. Numerous unique Matsuri held across the city bring extra heat to the season.
“Tachikawa Raku Market” is held in autumn. Four markets – “Tachikawa Shonin Matsuri” which is held by and promotes the shopping street, “Tachikawa Shimin Matsuri” where the citizens present their activities, “Nogyo Matsuri” where farmers sell their vegetables and plants, and Showa Kinen Park’s “Koyo & Koyo Matsuri” – are held simultaneously at the park. In October, the primary meeting for “Hakone Ekiden” is held here as well. The young athletes run a 20-km course starting from the Self Defense Force Tachikawa Residence through the city and finishing at Showa Kinen Park. You can cheer for them along the course.
The “Tachikawa Triangle Illumination” glamorously lights up the city in winter. You can enjoy unique decorative illuminations at 3 locations – “Tachikawa Sun Sun Illumination” by the north exit of Tachikawa station, “Tachikawa Keyaki Illumination” by the south exit, and “Winter Vista Illumination” at Showa Kinen Park. Around Christmas, fireworks light up Showa Kinen Park.
